Study: The Flemish farm

A multifunctional modern farmhouse that offers space for multiple generations under one roof. Barns and residential units in a cohesive design style, so that the different functions form a whole. The challenge lies in bringing together multifunctional buildings that retain the characteristic appearance of the farmhouse. This requires the subtle integration of modern elements that fit within the traditional context. Alinel fulfils the role of a box-in-box principle or second skin within the existing volume.

The Type B Wood naturally refers to the old barn, while combining the advantages of washability and durability of aluminium. The fins are flat and therefore animal-friendly. The semi-transparent version allows light to enter and ensures natural airflow in the stables. Type B Wood ‘Oak Malt’ is used, whereby the existing façade is brutally cleaned, chiselled and then rejoined with dark joints. The architect wanted to find a combination of two materials that radiate ageing. Their unevenness enhances colour variations and shadow formation.
